Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized various sectors, including healthcare, by enhancing decision-making, improving patient outcomes, and streamlining administrative tasks. In nursing education, AI has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing learning experiences, personalizing education, and improving the efficiency of training programs (Adesina & Alabi, 2023). AI applications in nursing education include virtual simulations, intelligent tutoring systems, and AI-powered tools that support clinical decision-making and assessment (Oladele et al., 2024).
Federal University of Technology, Akure, has been exploring the integration of AI in its nursing curriculum to enhance the educational experience and prepare students for the technological advancements in healthcare. AI-based learning tools allow nursing students to engage in simulated clinical scenarios, develop critical thinking skills, and receive real-time feedback on their performance (Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, AI can be used to optimize assessment processes by evaluating students’ progress and identifying areas that require further attention.
Despite the potential of AI in nursing education, challenges remain in its implementation, including the high cost of technology, the need for faculty training, and concerns about the adequacy of AI systems in mimicking human interactions in clinical environments (Olayemi & Salami, 2024). Furthermore, while AI offers numerous advantages, the degree to which it impacts nursing students’ learning outcomes and clinical competence is not yet fully understood. This study aims to assess the impact of AI in nursing education at Federal University of Technology, Akure, and evaluate its effectiveness in improving students' learning experiences.
As AI continues to gain prominence in healthcare, its potential in enhancing nursing education remains largely untapped. Despite the growing interest in AI-driven teaching tools, there is limited research on the specific impact of AI on nursing students’ learning outcomes in Nigeria, particularly at Federal University of Technology, Akure. Challenges such as the availability of technological infrastructure, faculty preparedness, and students’ adaptability to AI-driven tools may limit the full potential of AI in nursing education.
This study seeks to evaluate the impact of AI in nursing education, addressing the gap in knowledge regarding its effectiveness in improving students’ clinical competence, critical thinking, and overall learning outcomes.
This study will focus on nursing students at Federal University of Technology, Akure, who are exposed to AI-based learning tools in their curriculum. The research will be limited to assessing learning outcomes, student perceptions, and the challenges faced in using AI tools. Potential limitations include technological barriers, the cost of AI implementation, and variations in students' technological literacy.
